Day 1 Lima / Cuzco
|
• Morning transfer to the airport and flight to Cuzco
• Met on arrival and transfer to your hotel.
• Afternoon tour of this magnificent city, a blend of Inca and Spanish Cultures. Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire. According to the legend, the city was built by Inca Pachacuti, who transformed Cuzco from a sleepy city-state into the vast empire of Tahuantinsuyu. The first Spaniards arrived in 1533, and undertook the construction of a new city on the foundations of the old Inca city, replacing temples with churches and palaces with mansions for the conquerors.
- Koricancha or Temple of the Sun: As Cuzco was the center of the Tahuantinsuyo (Inca Empire), this is one of the most important of Inca temples. Originally a temple of the Killki culture, its walls served as the foundation for the construction of the Convento de Santo Domingo.
- Cuzco Cathedral: The first Cuzco Cathedral was built in 1539 at the Suntur Wasi Inca site; in 1560, the construction of a new cathedral on the Kiswir Kancha lot, palace of Inca Wiracocha, was ordered. The actual Cathedral was finished in 1664, a century after.
- Sacsayhuaman: The best known Inca ruin nearby Cuzco is the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, likely a religious construction for cosmology veneration and investigation (although some investigators believe it had a military function). The construction is herculean given the size of the megaliths, some of which weight between 90 and 128 tons.

- Pisac Market: Pisac is famous for its Mass and market. This town is located located 19.8 miles or 32 Km. northeast of Cusco, is famous for its colonial Church, where masses in Quechua are held every Sunday. Its colorful fairs also take place every day. The market, where the fair takes place, is accessible but there are no public restrooms. The surface of the market's main area is made of flat stone that makes rolling easy for wheelchair users, except in some zones (such as the lower part of the market away from the Church and the street in front of it) that have small stones on the surface. The space between stands is wide, they are at the right height to see the products and the area is shaded.
- Ollantaytambo Fortress: It was able fortress of Ollantaytambo, built by the Incas. A very steep stone staircase leads into the fortress. Across an esplanade there is a temple with 10 niches, and beside it a block of partially unworked stones. Beyond another esplanade, six huge rectangular monoliths (estimated weight: 50 tons) form the Temple of the Sun. Vestiges of rooms are seen on top, and on the other side of the hill a four storey building, either a military school or prison.

- Guided tour of the ruins: The ruins of Machu Picchu, rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. While the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top, erecting many hundreds of stone structures from the early 1400's, legends and myths indicate that Machu Picchu (meaning 'Old Peak' in the Quechua language) was revered as a sacred place from a far earlier time. Whatever its origins, the Inca turned the site into a small (5 square miles) but extraordinary city. Invisible from below and completely self-contained, surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the population, and watered by natural springs, Machu Picchu seems to have been utilized by the Inca as a secret ceremonial city. Two thousand feet above the rumbling Urubamba River, the cloud shrouded ruins have palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms and some 150 houses, all in a remarkable state of preservation. These structures, carved from the gray granite of the mountain top are wonders of both architectural and aesthetic genius. Many of the building blocks weigh 50 tons or more yet are so precisely sculpted and fitted together with such exactitude that the mortar-less joints will not permit the insertion of even a thin knife blade. Little is known of the social or religious use of the site during Inca times.
